Editor's Note

When I reflect on some of my most memorable travel experiences, a common thread emerges: human connection. While breathtaking views may wow us and attractions may impress us, it is the human connections we forge during our travels that touch our soul and stay with us long after we’ve returned home.

Travel is inherently about connecting with community. But for a community to be ready to engage with travellers, it first needs to be a good and happy place to call home.

This summer issue of Northern Soul features tourism through the lens of community. We spotlight initiatives that come from the residents themselves, as well as people and businesses who work to support the fabric of their communities. We’ve also curated a collection of stories from Canada’s islands, because where is community more vividly apparent than on an island?

Be sure to read our guest post ‘Hosting Regeneration’ from Michelle Holliday, a leader in the field of community-focused tourism.

Thank you for joining our community of like-minded travellers.

The Summer Collection

For many of us, island living is the dream. We picture summers on the beach and endless water views. But as communities, islands require special care and consideration. They often hold fragile ecosystems, endemic species or vulnerable communities. In our Summer Collection, we gather stories from some of Canada's islands. From the 36,000-island archipelago in the High Arctic to the urban-adjacent oasis in Toronto's harbour, these are the stories of our islanders.
